And a place to help you add forms...

... and all you have to do is call this page to process it. Easy.
Response-O-Matic Home Page: "There was a time when you had to be a programmer to add forms to your web pages.
Not anymore. Thanks to modern technology, all you need to do now is just create your forms in standard html. Then have your form call Response-O-Matic."

If you work on your own site...

Here is a cool little tool that will make the correct meta tag html for you.
Meta Tag Generator: "The major search engines often utilize meta tags for indexing purposes. This little program will create the tags in html format for you."

Ideoblog: Interesting Information to check in on once in a while.

: "This is a blog about the ideas that occur to me as I go about my life in Champaign, Illinois, Rappahannock County, Virginia, and other places. Even though it is a 'dead' blog

..it is still beautifully designed. And the idea can be used so effectively for other projects. It was created and hyped strongly to introduce filmmakers who did interpretations of speed for Nike. Think of the 'cool factor' of this. Instead of creating a site to hawk shoes, the blog introduces young filmmakers who create films based on the concept of speed and nike shoes. People interested in 'indie' films see the blog and then send their friends there.

No hard sell "10% off every pair" crap.

This site created a 'buzz' because people talked about it at so many different levels. Concept, content, execution and 'cool'.

What projects could you document on a simple site that could be considered so cool that everyone would want to tell thier friends about it? Hey - you all are photographers... self-assignments, pictures of an event (vote day?), your kids, recent commercial outtakes from a huge assignment, portraits of your clients...

Just a thought.

Art of Speed

New book - at least it is new to me.

Looks very interesting.

Ian Scrivener has a very clean site

I wish the images were a bit larger, but I should also take my laptop screen to a more manageable resolution.

fine art nude photography by Ian Scrivener: "Welcome to the July edition of the site! Winter is a such bad time for me shooting art nudes...its just too cold to shoot outside on location, which of course is where I mostly like to shoot..."

Nice work from Lincoln Clarke

His site doesn't do the work justice, but the images are worth taking a look. Portraits and nudes on location.

Are you Taking Care of Your Customers?

I just received this message through email:

Recently, the PayPal site had technology issues that may have hindered your ability to conduct business using PayPal.

To show our appreciation for your continued business, we're going to credit you for PayPal transaction fees incurred on October 28, 2004, between 12:00:00 AM PDT and 11:59:59 PM PDT.

This is nice. Even though I never had any problems with the outage, they are taking care of me as though I was personally injured. This is really taking care of business in a way that is worth talking about.

How is your customer service? Is it worth your clients telling others about you?

See Susans Blog

Here is a photographer useing a blog to increase awareness and marketing. Great job. And a fantastic place to send folks who are thinking about working with her. Cool.

UPDATE:
Several of you have asked how a photographer might use a blog to increase business.

This photographer uses hers to show selected images now and then. It is a great "conversation starter" and gets images in front of all sorts of folks - who then send it on to others to see.

Viral Marketing.

As photographers (artists) we need to create a "wow" factor that will transcend the feeling or perception of being a commodity.

One of the simplest and least expensive (while at the same time creating a huge "interest") is the Blog / Photoblog.

Great Quote from Avedon. Perhaps this was one of the reasons he was such a powerful force in photography while those who try to be all things to all people escape the rigours of fame... ya know.

Seth's Blog: "'I've worked out a series of no's. No to exquisite light, no to apparent compositions, no to the seduction of poses or narrative. And all these no's force me to the 'yes.' I have a white background. I have the person I'm interested in and the thing that happens between us.'

Bizwerk is a really good Blog to read on the Tech world

Interesting quote that you should take the time to read fully. Developing a marketing strategy should include a little of this as well. I haven't read this book yet, but is only 2 down on my list.

"From The Anatomy of Buzz by Emanuel Rosen:"

Bizwerk: "Cameras were invented in the 1820s. Why did it take roughly sixty years for them to become popular? The answer, I believe , is embedded in the slogan used by Kodak to introduce their first camera in 1888: 'You press the button -- we do the rest.' When they were first invented, cameras were very complicated to operate."

On going to the Photographer...

John Derbyshire tells the tale of his trip to the photographer. Quite entertaining.

Article by JD: "In photographs, however, all this is cruelly lost. Who is he, this leering doofus with Alfred E. Neuman ears, round shoulders, and receding chin, squinting out at the world over eye-bags the size of mule panniers? Cant he afford a decent haircut? Doesnt he know how to sit? Is that supposed to be a smile, or what?"

An Interview with Photographer Christopher Stangland

Read an interesting interview with a very creative guy.

Photoblogs.org - Featured Photoblog for October 2004: "Commendable is his commitment to this project. Stangland explains his goal is to take exactly one Polaroid a day, whether he's disappointed or nothe still posts it. Why? Other than the expense of the film, which comes out to about $1.00 a shotChris tells me it's to be mindful of the process of taking photos. 'I only get one crack at it... and it's a non-reflex camera."

Cool Camera takes Sequences

I still like Polaroid images. Wish I shot more of the stuff - uh - probably those folks at Polaroid do as well.

This is a creative site by a photographer who shoots Polaroid almost exclusively. Check it out.

Graph Check 4x5 Polaroid sequential Camera: "These photographs were taken with a Polaroid Graph-Check camera, which is a sequential 4x5 camera. It is built like a tank (seriously. the damn thing is made out of milled steel), and was marketed as an aid to golfers and baseball players. You know, to check their swings. If you should happen to stumble across one I'd highly recommend picking it up. The film is expensive, and fussy, and sloppy and the camera itself is not all that easy to use, but they are still really really neat."

Louis is someone who knows and appreciates artistic freedom. He has good taste. He has managed to negotiate a varied and successful career through the uneven times of our industry. Hes a bit of an alchemist in the way he puts people and ideas and art and technologies together. In many ways he personifies (the buzzword) convergence. Heres our interview:"

I am just fascinated by this stuff

Mount St. Helens VolcanoCam - Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument: "This is an image of Mount St. Helens, taken from the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The Observatory and VolcanoCam are located at an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet, about five miles from the volcano. You are looking approximately south-southeast across the North Fork Toutle River Valley."

The first time this happened I was a newlywed...

Article on Using Word to do Professional Level Page Layout

I have always found Word to be rather clunky, but this article seems well done. I will read the publication mentioned. I get so much copy from clients in Word... and most of them desperately need to read this.

Publishers Marketing Association - Newsletter: "Yes, You Can Use Microsoft Word to Set Type That Looks Professional
Aaron Shepard
January, 2004
Can a program like QuarkXPress, Adobe PageMaker, or Adobe InDesign produce better-looking copy than Microsoft Word? Certainly, when users know what theyre doing. But most often, they dont.
According to research cited by James Felici in his Complete Manual of Typography, 90 percent of the people who use such page layout programs never change the default settings, and, as Felici points out, these settings are never much good as they are. For instance, InDesigns main typographic advantage over Word is its automatic letterspacing featurewhich InDesigns default setting turns off. "
