Over at ChangeThis :: The Pro-Am Revolution

A good manifesto on the world changing "pro-ams" that have made huge impacts on several areas of business. None more than photography though. ProAms and the ProAm equipment revolution has definitely taken aim on photogaphers everywhere.

ChangeThis :: The Pro-Am Revolution: "According to many commentators, the 1990s were a decade in which large corporations were rampant, their control over society virtually unchallenged. Yet the rise of Pro-Ams suggests counter trends were at work as well. "

Have you ever noticed the arrow in the FedEx logo?

Here is a short interview with its creator. Nice and sweet. Personally I wish everything was as easy to fill out as the shipping form for FedEx, but alas....

Verbally Lashed" Photog

Now it's the photog's fault for bad performance on the sports field. We are powerful influencers of sporting events....

McMillan lashes out at photographer - Cricket - www.smh.com.au: "New Zealand batsman Craig McMillan has shown the strain of a tough week by verbally lashing out at a media photographer yesterday."

Keep Dean Collins in your prayers or thoughts...

From a forum I gelong to...

"We wanted to let you know Dean is in the hospital and has been told his cancer has spread and it is not curable. We thought this might be the best way to reach some of you folks we felt might want to know. He was admitted with trouble breathing and recent scans show the cancer has spread throughout his system. He is quite heavily sedated with morphine to help manage the pain. It is unlikely he will be going home from the hospital. He is staying at Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa.
Keep him in your prayers please."

I am sure glad that we don't

measure everything the way these retail consumer analysts do. If you read it carefully the article says that sales were good on Friday, but not as good as they expected so that was not so good, but then Friday isn't the best prognosticator as other conditions can come into play. ?? In other words they have no idea what they are doing, measuring or critiquing... Morons.

My Way News: "But enthusiasm over Black Friday sales was tempered as Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's biggest retailer, said its November sales failed to meet expectations, signaling shoppers may not be a bullish as hoped this holiday."

Sensor Cleaning: A no-nonsense approach

Sensor Cleaning: "There comes a day when every DSLR owner looks at a 100% magnification of one of their images in Photoshop and gasps, 'Where did that dust come from?' Nasty out of focus blobs. Squiggly little dust motes. Hairs. Uggh."

Hey - Ya gotta bookmark this site...

Very Cool Photoshop script...

digitalMSX - Software: "This is a Photoshop CS Javascript that allows you to automate the resizing and cropping of images in Photoshop without worrying about the orientation or aspect ratio (proportions) of the image. It will resize and crop an image to the exact dimensions that you specify. Note that many people have mentioned the 'Fit Image' command which merely resizes an image to fit within a frame of a certain proportion, but does not actually crop an image to what you want as the final result."

Blair Underwood - short film

This kind of thing will explode in the next year. Short, well made films for video / web distribution. Young directors and those who are "monetarily challenged" will find the medium a fantastic way to break into the larger arena of mdium to big budget films. It will also be a totally new medium for creatives to work in.

Side note. Actors may need the work. Think of the movies that are the big new releases these recent months: Polar Express, Incredibles, Team America, Shrek 2, Sponge Bob.... hmmmm. Maybe actors will really need the work as CGI and animation make further inroads. And you don't have those overblown, pampered egos to deal with when you do it without actors. Just overblown, pampered CGI artists... yeah, we can deal with that.

Amazon.com: Welcome: "This week, in director David Slade's ''Do Geese See God,'' what comes around goes around--and around--for the frantic ''Dr. Awkward'' (Blair Underwood), a man who needs to take the time to stop and smell the roses. (Don't we all?)"

Sometimes the writing leaves me breathless...

from wincing and laughing. Geeez, just show me the pictures. I believe this counts as a poseur alert. Dunno, maybe not.
Buffalo News - Photography exhibit leaves in the latest wrinkles: "There is, still, much work in this show that is most likely realized through the lens of the camera. Catherine Opie's marvelous 14 untitled images of Malibu surfers retains the sense of real place, even if it may allude to a spiritual condition as represented by the Catholic Stations of the Cross. John Pfahl's images of Niagara Falls (in the room labeled 'The Sublime') also have the sense of an in-place camera doing the main work - although their candidacy for the 'sublime' may be weakened by Pfahl's underlying conceptual stance. You can't be thinking things out when you're about to pitch yourself into the unknown that is the sublime. "

...but is it a Nude?

Well, it looks like a nude. The power of the still image is on display here. See the contest winners over at Apogee.

The Apogee Photo Magazine Bi-monthly Contest: Open Spaces: "We chose 'Belly Dune' by Lynda Lester-Slack as the Grand Prize winner. This beautifully executed image was exactly what we had in mind when we posted this contest. It is a gorgeous image that has all of the sensuousness of a good nude, BUT it isn't! "

My Favorite Thing Redux

I was talking with my littlest one last night when the unmistakeable sound of John coltrane filled the living room. I turned to see a startling site. Trane's "My Favorite Things" was being used as the music for a commercial. And Elvin, Jimmy and McCoy were there along with him while pictures of christmas ornaments and wrapping appeared with an excited VO.

I don't know what to make of it still. Coltrane is one of my few heros and I am not sure how I feel about his music as the background of a commercial. On the other hand, maybe this little fraction of exposure could spark some interest in those that hear it and they may discover the wonder of his music. I hope so.

And to hear a true improvisational master, listen to the "Live at the Village Vanguard Again", Implulse, recording of "My Favorite Things" - then go buy some Christmas ornaments or something.

Really, Really Big Books... Really small price...

MyPublisher Hardcover Books: "Think magnum. Think over-sized. Think jumbo."

Wow - these are really cool! Take a look and think of the possibilities. I have ordered some of those smaller books that they offer and this company sure seems to deliver high quality at a great price.

Nice site by a shooter in Chile

I personally like the horizontal scrolling and the nice interaction with the 'zooming' tools and the different categories. Take a look at how he handles the 'models' area (click on the model's image). All in all, very interesting site and good work.

Cool Mac FTP tool

GSFTP : The Nifty Macintosh FTP/SFTP Client !: "With GSFTP you can efficiently and reliably fetch and transmit files to any kind of Internet server using FTP or SFTP. The goal of GSFTP is to be simple and to the point. You won't find any cruft here. Just a basic FTP/SFTP client. GSFTP will work with servers running on Windows and Unix. GSFTP includes what you need and none of the cruft the other guys have - at a price point our competition can't touch."

Looks pretty nifty.

Royalty Free Stock Photos by Subscription -Comstock 1700K Subscription Plan: "The Comstock 1700k Subscription Plan is designed for creative professionals who use a high volume of royalty free photos but don't have the budget to purchase them one at a time. A Comstock 1700k subscription gives you up to 50 royalty free photos per day from the Comstock Images world-renowned collection of over 20,000 royalty free photos."

Well - uh, that is interesting. There is a strange relationship between the folks who create the base item, then a middleman goes in to usurp the creators, while needing them to stay in business. Interesting...

Zig - no ZAG!

MSNBC - Hardees serves up 1,420-calorie burger: "The 'Monster Thickburger' two 1/3-pound slabs of Angus beef, four strips of bacon, three slices of cheese and mayonnaise on a buttered sesame seed bun sells alone for $5.49, $7.09 with fries and a soda."

So while everyone else is focusing on cutting fats and carbs and whatever, these guys do this. Do you think they are crazy? Do you think they are nuts? Do you think they are gonna sell the heck out of these guys... ?

Think about the marketing message of niche groups. Think about going out on the edge to do something that everyone else isn't already doing. Think about the message that says we don't care what everyone else is doing, we care about what a few of our clients want.

Do that in photography? Sure you can.

"... till you give it away"

Seth's Blog: "Can you make any money giving away an ebook? I think you can. I think you do when the idea spreads and people want to interact with you in other ways. And those interactions are the currency of the future."

Now this is interesting. I decided that this Halloween I would get some good pics of my girls in their costumes. On camera flash point'n shoots weren't cutting it. Brought home the strobes and the stands and the backdrop and set it up on the front porch. After I shot the girls my neighbor comes over and asks if I will shoot his girls. "Sure." As the halloween crowd (mostly shorter versions of scary villains) started flowing in I offered to photograph the kids and give the folks a print. Went over huge and after I gave the small prints out, I am still getting print orders for the larger images.

Now - yesterday I get a call from a neighbor (the cute kid in the lion suit) who has an import business. Has 80 shots to do and a budget to work with that I can certainly work with. After we book the photo shoot, we look at his website and discover that his Google rankings suck. After a quick perusal, I gave him an overview of the problems and now have a contract to help him rework his site and create a Google AdWord program.

Give it away? You bet. Cause the future depends on what we do today.

Here's a Project for some of you

What a great project to get into. Documenting America's veterans before they are all gone. My dad served in WW2 and some in Korea, and I grew up around the uniform and the medals... but he never talked about it. We heard a few stories about his camp and the pet wallabees and stuff, but nothing about the Okinawa and Phillipines campaigns. He just didn't talk about it.

He's gone now.

We should have asked.

I think this is about right

I am so much less interested in the toys these days.

Why Your Camera Does Not Matter 2004 Ken Rockwell: "Your equipment DOES NOT affect the quality of your image. The less time and effort you spend worrying about your equipment the more time and effort you can spend creating great images. The right equipment just makes it easier, faster or more convenient for you to get the results you need.
The camera's only job is to get out of the way of making photographs."

Even Digital Memories Can Fade

The New York Times > Technology > Even Digital Memories Can Fade: "'It is a global problem for the biggest governments and the biggest corporations all the way down to individuals,' said Ken Thibodeau, director for the electronic records archives program at the National Archives and Records Administration.
In the meantime, individual PC owners struggle in private. Desk drawers and den closets are filled with obsolete computers, stacks of Zip disks and 3-inch diskettes, even the larger 5-inch floppy disks from the 1980's. Short of a clear solution, experts recommend that people copy their materials, which were once on vinyl, film and paper, to CD's and other backup formats."

Just attended this seminar...

No Bs Digital Photography: "WARNING:For the overly sensitive, politically correct, easily offended, sugar coated cry-babies and the faint of heart, you've been given fair and ample warning."

Nope - not a political seminar... unless you think that working without Adjustment Layers is somehow a political statement. I enjoyed much of it and had some reservations on other parts, but then that is like most seminars I attend.

I will have a more detailed summary over at www.photographicmarketing.com sometime Friday.

Power, Madness and Cheap Chairs

This day is a momentous one for us in Arizona. The news outlets are buzzing. Every station with a news show has been telling us about this for a week. There are literally hundreds of people standing in line waiting for the opportunity to be the first.

Vote? Nope, that was last week.

This mega-moment is the opening of the Ikea store. The first hundred people get a chair. A chair. One that they will have to put together themselves.

And yet the freeway was clogged this morning with people wanting to get in line and wait for a chance to go into a store that will be open for 364 days a year from now on.

Think about how Ikea has created a huge 'Buzz' around the opening of a cheap furniture store. They had the news outlets giving them free publicity for weeks. What can you do to help others create this kind of 'buzz' for your photography business. (Ok - yeah, you probably wont get weeks of news coverage, but you get the idea.)

Cheers!

"Fill these out.."

This morning I went to the Doc to get some blood work done. Show up on time and am handed a packet of papers to fill out.

Now, you may be thinking that is normal. Well, my wife and my 3 kids and I have been going to this doctor for over 8 years. We have filled these things out time and time again. All the same information - address - phone - insurance.... etc...

"Can't you just get this information once and fill it in?" I asked.

No. Of course not. The government and the insurance industry are too backward and steeped in ludditology to ever make that happen.

"At least you should make these available on your web site so I could have downloaded them and filled them out yesterday," I implored.

"We don't have a web site." Ahhh.

Poor customer service has me looking for another doctor. And you can imagine what billings my little family generate.

What poor customer service items could be chasing your clients away? What inattention to details could have them looking for another photographer of designer? What could your web site do to help you retain customers?

I can think of several ideas... you should too.

Organizing digital photography

Bradenton Herald | 11/07/2004 | Organizing digital photography: "The thrill of owning a digital camera can quickly give way to despair once the images start piling up in a disorganized heap on your hard drive."

Yeah, if only the headline were true...

...and if it was, we'd all be out of a job!

A good Article on Blogs and their value

The New York Times > Business > Media & Advertising > Advertising: Advertisers Learn From Candidates: "'The blogs don't market themselves,' Mr. Hahn said. 'People self-select the blogs they read.' For that reason, they may be particularly effective ways to reach younger consumers, who often dislike having products sold to them but enjoy feeling that they have discovered something for themselves.
Some marketers are already experimenting with the form. Since last month, General Motors has been posting a blog devoted to a type of engine, known as the small block, that it developed 50 years ago for Chevrolets. Nike and others have hired Denton Media, the operator of eight gossipy blogs like Gawker and Wonkette, to create custom blogs. Ad agencies like Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners in Sausalito, Calif., and Yellowfin Direct Marketing in Boston have started blogs of their own."

George Silk. 87, RIP

Boston.com / News / Boston Globe / Obituaries / George Silk, 87, noted war, sports photographer: "NEW YORK -- George Silk, a photojournalist who spent 30 years with Life magazine, earning fame for his coverage of World War II and later pioneering the use of a special camera for depicting athletes in motion, died at a Norwalk, Conn., hospital Saturday of congestive heart failure. He was 87."

Nice article on Self Motivation and success

Montreal Gazette - canada.com network: "Magda Slezak lost her job on a Thursday, cleaned out her desk on Friday, and on Monday, hit the pavement running.
Using her severance package to tide her over, she did her own market research, put together a business plan and landed a bank loan."
