If you like David Carson's work in Design and Photography

I have always admired David's work, but have never felt a need to borrow from his style. A little too intense for my work. Really fun to look at though, and his photography is wonderful.

Trek: David Carson - Recent Works: "With Trek, David Carson is deftly shuffling the deck, bridging the elusive gaps between several different genres. His photographs are always of particular interest: everyday people, places and objects transformed through his uncompromising respect for free association, his extraordinary sense of color, and his vision."

Online Depth of Field Calculator

You can either print them out, or tote your satellite-linked laptop into the wild. Very nice for anyone wondering about how Depth of Field really works for each lens.

Online Depth of Field Calculator: "DOFMaster - for Windows operating systems. Use DOFMaster to print depth of field scales for use in the field.
DOFMaster LE - for Palm OS devices.
DOFMaster Hyperfocal Chart - for Windows operating systems. Use DOFMaster Hyperfocal Chart to print hyperfocal distance charts for use in the field."

This is a Very Deep look at Digital Camera Depth of Field

Depth of field for digital cameras: "Digital camera sensors (at least in the cameras below $1000 or so) are much smaller. For example, the active sensor area in the Olympus C-30x0Z series is about 5.27x7.03 mm.
(I arrived to these numbers based on the '35 mm equivalent' 32 mm focal length at the Oly 6.5 mm setting. Actually, if Olympus does not follow the customary rule of using the diagonal measure to define lens equivalence, the size may be a few percent different.)
A frame from such a camera printed at 9x12 inches (23x30 cm; note the somewhat different aspect ratio) requires a 44x magnification. Therefore the acceptable size of the circle of confusion will be almost exactly five times smaller, close to 0.006 mm. "

Filters for Dark Skin Portraiture...

A short discussion...

Response to B&W filters for dark skin portraits

Hey - you oughta go shoot yourself...

I hear that a lot, maybe they mean this way...

Photographic: Point & Shoot: How to Shoot Self Portraits: "Shooting a self-portrait is a challenging task, but can be very rewarding. The one person that most photographers probably photograph least is themselves, and this is true even with those who enjoy shooting portraits of others. However, taking self-portraits has several advantages: you'll always have a willing subject, and you may be able to interpret the 'real you' better than others can. You can also use yourself as a test subject for experimenting with lighting or other creative techniques."

Now I live solo in Houston, where I’ve been since my NASA days."

What I need - Wattle Reduction...

Photoshop Tricks, Part 1: "Trick 1: Getting Rid of a Wattle
First of all, it might be useful to define wattle. This term, which my wife learned from my mother-in-law, describes slack flesh that descends from one's chin to the neck. In Figure 24.1, you can see what I mean. If you're a Hollywood actor or somehow sneaked to the front of the gene pool (or if you're under 20), you probably have a connection between your jawline and your neck that can be described by a T-squarea perfect (don't you hate 'em?) 90-degree angle. For the rest of us, we have to be content with the image at the right. Let's send a distress call to Photoshop post haste!"

'Aaron Siskind: Centennial Celebration'

Where: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 5601 Main

The photograph Jerome, Arizona 21 shows dark pieces of paint flaking away from a white ground. Somebody may have tried something similar in your Intro to Photography class, but this is the picture that started it all. Aaron Siskind's 1949 photo has become an iconic image in the history of photography. It exemplifies his ability to hone in on abstract forms in the real world, and, as the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's wall text wryly points out, 'has spawned endless photographs of peeling paint by imitators.' It's on view as part of the MFAH's 'Aaron Siskind: Centennial Celebration' exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of the photographer's birth. "

The Lartigue Hoax? - A new book offers a controversial take on the famous photographer. By JimLewis

This is a VERY interesting article. Don't know who Lartigue is? Well, read it and find out. And get somu culchaa.. eh?

The Lartigue Hoax? - A new book offers a controversial take on the famous photographer. By JimLewis: "Jacques Henri Lartigue was granted a childhood of great privilege: On this, and it seems on this alone, everyone can agree. He was born in a Parisian suburb in 1894, his father was an enormously wealthy banker, and in keeping with the conventions of the belle poque, Lartigue was expected to do nothing of consequence but live his life elegantly and honorably. Amusements, sports, travel, fashion: These were the diversions suitable to his day and station, and Lartigue took to them enthusiastically, and in particular to the then-new hobby of 'instantaneous' photographythat is, pictures taken with cameras quick enough to freeze motion and stop time, to show, say, divers in midair. Seminal School-Portrait Photographer Dies At 92

Bad year for losing the greats in photography. This touching report will bring a smile to your face as you remember standing in line waiting for the teacher to comb your hair and sit you on the stool... I am wondering why he would have chosen Eloy as a place to retire? Maybe it was the remote nature of it that helped keep the herds of young, idealistic School Photographers from constantly annoying him with questions on lighting and the best way to have a kid clasp their hands in their lap.

Read it all.... (from the ONION... get it)

The Onion Seminal School-Portrait Photographer Dies At 92: "PHOENIXHenry Anszczak, the photographer whose influential work revolutionized modern school portraiture, died Sunday at his family home in Eloy. He was 92.

According to longtime assistant Dave Olsen, Anszczak died of natural causes.
'On Sunday, Mr. Anszczak passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his family and scores of yearbooks,' Olsen said. 'We will never forget his wonderful artistic achievements. He blazed the trail for thousands of school photographers nationwide. The lion of 20th-century public-educational culture roars no more.'"

Opening Multiple RAW Images with the Same Setting

Here is a great tip I just got from Steve Burger (ProDigitalImage). It will really be a time saver for those of you that work with RAW files.

Open a single image in RAW, make your adjustments and then save it. Then when you open the next image, hold the SHIFT Key down and double click the image in the Image Browser. It will open with the same settings you had just applied to the image before it. If you highlight several images in the Image Browser, they will all open with the same 'saved' settings.

Slick - thanks Steve!

Should Star Trek Die?

Sometimes you just have to take a stand on things of major importance. Imagine if you will, a world where Scotty never has to make the warp engines outperform any previous attempts. Whoa... my power grid is expanding....

Sean Kernan's Great Article on Finding Your Own Voice...

Communication Arts: Columns:
Sean Kernan has some very powerful things to say about finding a style and how to steel your self against mindless criticism. Read the whole thing...

"I told Lisette Model I thought my work lacked something. Yes, LIFE!, she yelled.

I got some spam the other day advertising a college degree without courses, or attendance. I had some hard times in school, so clearly this was my kind of place.

Although lately, I have gotten a nice vicarious taste of the school experience simply by mentoring a student who is working on a M.F.A. in photography. Mostly I cheerlead and try to help him sort things out."

Interestin information on a slower wedding market

From a forum I am on...
Don't know if it is precise or not. Could be something to consider...
"...are about 23% fewer people of 'marring age' than there were throughout the 1990's. For example, in 1997, the age group of people 25 - 29 years of age (generally agreed to be most of our brides and grooms) represented 4.5% of the population. THIS year they are only 3.5% of the population... nearly a 23% decrease. The main reason seems to be that about 27 years ago parents decided to have only one or two children instead of the three or four that was more normal before that.

Another factor is the tendency of couples to get married after age 25 instead of at a younger age. Add to the above the fact that in the last 15 years, many people decided to get into the wedding industry as a profession. It was a growth industry and really booming. For instance, in 1991 the average price for a 5 your wedding photography coverage was about $1,200. By 1999 this same coverage was $1,500 and in 2002 had grown to $2,200. In 1985 there were about 25 wedding photographers in the Sacramento area and now there are more than 140!

So, few brides getting married later in life plus many more vendors and the average photographer is having a tough 3 or 4 years. More evidence of this is very slow winter numbers. Couples are able to book a nice place in the Summer/Fall season so have no reason to plan a winter wedding. Winter weddings were mostly the result of a scarcity of reception facilities. There are more facilities now and fewer couples resulting in fewer winter weddings. "

Finding an Artist Agent; Selling Art Online
maybe a little dated, but still good information.
Cheers,

Here's a good article for selling prints on EBay.

eDigitalPhoto: Online Selling
This can be a fun project and also lead to tons of leads for your own galleries of online photos. Combine a good auction with a rich PHOTOtool gallery of images and you could see some substantial sales.

a site for Photographer Mark Mahaney

Nice visuals and excellent photography. This is a flash site with no meta tags and marketable page names. Cannot be found by search engines. I found it at LinkDup, but if I hadn't found it there...? You will enjoy the imagery and the nice, subtle design. Too bad his web designer didn't understand the total medium... unless, of course, this is exactly what they wanted - a private portfolio site for chosen clients and prospects.

Cheers,
