We Don’t Have a Budget; Can We Use Your Photo For Free? NOT « Visual Perspective:

"Now that I’ve ranted on I’ll tell you about another really bad side effect of giving your work away for free; it devalues you entire portfolio. When you give free images to one client they spread the word and others will come to you because you are now known as someone that won’t charge or charges very little. Word of mouth is the most effective method of advertising to this day; do you really want people talking about how cheap you are? Do you want to be known as the photog that just gives it up for nothing?"

An Antique Drill shot for a Builder Client

From the series:

We wanted a 'hand-finished' message for the builder, and the images / subject matter were created with that in mind. I was able to find this old drill in a friends dads garage and managed to borrow it for a few days.

Light is sunlight through glass block, mirrors for reflected fill and a small movie spotlight to open shadows a bit.

This series was shot on Polaroid 55PN, processed to negative and contact printed. You are viewing a scan of that contact print. Other than dust spotting no other Photoshop was used for the image. The camera is a Toyo 4x5 with a 210MM Schneider at 5.6. Base is swung to provide very limited DOF.

An older shot for a client's brochure: Shot on 4x5 and 55PN.

We wanted a distinct look of craft.

I decided to shoot it on 4x5 and swing it to provide a very shallow DOF. Using 55PN I processed out the negative and made a contact sheet. We printed the piece in 4 color black and white with a silver component to the midzones. Using a flannel paper, we had to first put a letterpress field of white down to let the shades show over the dark gray linen paper. It was an amazing little piece.

For The Ladies -- and "that guy"

Interesting post by my buddy, Keith Taylor in Atlanta. Something to think about, and some fine images too.
Kountry Keith Photography: For The Ladies -- and "that guy":

"My buddy (and talented photographer) Lee Starnes and I were talking about “that guy” just the other day and expressing our frustration over him. “That guy” is the guy that cruises Model Mayhem 24/7, looking for young girls to photograph in next to nothing. “That guy” is the guy that has really no interest in photographing anything but scantily-clad women. “That guy” is the guy that more often than not has questionable skills as a photographer. “That guy” is the guy that might not have any idea how to interact with women in general – much less a highly attractive one without using his camera as a crutch. “That guy” is the guy that gets into photography just because that is the only way he is able to get a girl to acknowledge his existence. “That guy” is the guy who would be hard pressed to get a woman to just remove her clothes for him or so much as even consider for a nanosecond the idea of sleeping with him. And most importantly “that guy” is the guy who gives the rest of the male photographers out there a reputation as being creeps in some cases."

With her husband, Eric Miles, a dealer in rare photography books, Brenda is planning a blog to discuss both commercial and fine art photography. I can't wait for that dialogue."

Kayla in Seattle: A portrait with texture.

Shot on the beach at Mukilteo, Washington.

Taken on that card that had been washed. I tried to get the soap residue out of it, but all of the images have been messed with and have soap on them.

Next I will run the CF card through the dishwasher and get it really clean. I hope.

Meanwhile, this is with the small SpeedLightProKit softbox on a 430 set at 1/2 power. It is being hand held and is slightly above her face tilted down. Sunlight is to her back, strobe is to camera left.

The National Endowment for the Art of Persuasion?

Big Hollywood » Blog Archive » The National Endowment for the Art of Persuasion?:

"Now admittedly, I’m a skeptic of BIG government. In my view, power tends to overreach whenever given the opportunity. It’s a law of human nature that has very few exceptions. That said, it felt to me that by providing issues as a cynosure for inspiration to a handpicked arts group - a group that played a key role in the President’s election as mentioned throughout the conference call - the National Endowment for the Arts was steering the art community toward creating art on the very issues that are currently under contentious national debate; those being health care reform and cap-and-trade legislation. Could the National Endowment for the Arts be looking to the art community to create an environment amenable to the administration’s positions?

Before arguing why I see this as a gross overreach of the National Endowment for the Arts and its mission, a brief background on the conference call is needed."

Sony Daily Edition Reader Adds 3G

Gotta admit. This is pretty cool.
Sony Daily Edition Reader Adds 3G, Aims at Kindle | Popular Science:

"But what good is 3G with Sony's drab, old library? That's on the mend, too. The new Library Finder application allows you to browse and borrow from your local library's e=book catalog through a partnership with the OverDrive network. And earlier this summer, Sony added 1 million public domain titles via Google and Times bestsellers. They've also recently (finally) found love for the EPUB e-book format, the standard e-book format used by trade book publishers."

Artisan Colour Website is in final Beta

... and ready for public viewing.

Artisan Colour is a pre-press and large display graphics house in Scottsdale. They wanted a new site that would more show their wide range of offerings. Client list was like a who's who of top retail, but for some privacy concerns, we decided to skip that page. Let's just say they rock rock rock with some of the most incredible fashion and high-end retailers in the business.

Recently they added a large display graphics area to their business. We featured that work in the new website, and also began working with some social media approaches to get their message out.

Their QC is unmatched and the facility is always buzzing with the best of the industry. If you need large, custom graphics done, or want to pass that info on to your clients, check them out here:

Artisan Colour, INC

You can follow them at Twitter for insights into large format printing, advertising and design trends for retail graphics.

I like the design... I wanted it to be open and simple, letting the 'message' that they offered be totally unencumbered by too many graphics. The site should also not try to look like it is a design site... they work with other's design. So I kept the look minimal and the colors subdued.

Getting ready to launch Jeanne Newhall's new site later today.

"6. Your work will not sell itself.

Most college kids don’t realize that art schools gain standing largely by virtue of their ability to market themselves. If an alumnus ends up becoming famous, a school will latch on to them even if they only attended for a semester.

The irony is that while a school’s “rep” is a product of marketing, few art schools incorporate any marketing or other business courses in their curriculum. That’s ridiculous — because in today’s market, learning how to sell your work is as important as learning how to create it."

In practice though, it’s a lot more than just working on amazing projects for amazing clients from the comfort of your own home. There is a tremendous amount of competition out there, and a lot of it is willing to play dirty, cut-throat and underhanded to beat you to the clients. How are you supposed to get ahead of those guys? Is it even possible to earn an honest buck? Thankfully, it is possible and can be a lot easier than you think."

Has Monocle brought a corrective lens to the business of magazines? - Press, Media - The Independent:

"There are those who like to scoff at Brûlé. His globe-trotting lifestyle and fascination with airline uniforms and airport architecture (which he details in his Fast Lane column for the Financial Times) is lampooned in a blog: Being Tyler Brûlé (“writing inspired by the fabulous lifestyle of Tyler Brûlé”). When he founded Monocle, one American website sneered at his aim of selling 200,000 copies within six months (“Ah, little Tyler”) and suggested he was headed for the rocks.

But it has not turned out that way, and maybe other, bigger, media companies could learn something from the Brûlé approach. Monocle, not yet three years old, is a beautifully produced briefing on international affairs, business, culture and design, retailing at a premium price of £5. It is selling 150,000 at news stands. Subscribers pay £75 per annum, which at 10 issues a year represents a 50 per cent increase in cover price but includes a digital version of the magazine and unlimited access via the website to the full Monocle archive, which sits behind a pay curtain. Across 85 countries there are 12,000 subscribers (double last year’s figure) and Brûlé says they’re all at ful"

The F STOP » Professional Photographers Discuss Their Craft » Article Archive » Brains Behind the Beauty

Cool article.
The F STOP » Professional Photographers Discuss Their Craft » Article Archive » Brains Behind the Beauty:

"When I commission a magazine everything has to flow. I plan that thing from beginning to end and it needs pace and energy. For me that’s the attraction, taking the reader on a visual journey, creating an environment that is consistent, yet unexpected too. Every picture is important, every commission. I remember Terry Jones saying “Even if it is the smallest image in the book, it doesn’t mean it can’t be the best”. Kind of true when you consider all those guys who came through i-D that way.

Another to consider is being aware of what your favored photographers are up to, where they are in the world, what excites them. I always think it’s best to talk with photographers to see what pushes their buttons, then commission with that in mind. You’re likely to get better pictures."

Photoshop Insider Blog By Scott Kelby » Blog Archive » …But That’s Not What This Other Guy is Saying…..

Good advice for us all.
Photoshop Insider Blog By Scott Kelby » Blog Archive » …But That’s Not What This Other Guy is Saying…..:

"So instead, without being a smart-alec in any way, I politely let him know that what I wrote in the book is actually how I feel on the topic, so he already knows that’s what I believe, but I also told him (I’m paraphrasing here):

On the Web you’ll find conflicting information on every topic; whether it’s medical advice or how to hang a picture frame; from how to play the Blues on guitar, to how to cook spaghetti bolognese. It really comes down to you making a decision about which advice to follow. You have to choose which person’s explanation, theory, or technique sounds more “right” or makes more sense to you, and try that and see what you think. :)

In the end, I’ve realized how important it is to find sources that I can trust on a wide variety of topics. I usually look for experts on the topic, and once I find someone who makes sense to me, and then (this is important), I take their advice and try it for myself and it works for me, then that becomes my go-to person for that topic."
Them internets can be so confusing.

Armed with this information, commercial photographers who are developing or expanding their businesses will know how to evolve and grow during periods of both prosperity and recession."

Alana in Classic Black on Mercer Island

Part of our little morning shoot a week ago or so. Alana is lit with a lot of overcast light which is soft and provides nearly shadowless light. I added a Canon 430 in a 33" umbrella (shoot thru) and aimed it at her torso - shoulder high. Setting the power on 1/4 it was able to be a half stop over the ambient and still recycle fairly quickly. It was starting to get a little more overcast and dark as we shot this.

Adding a little light (and a slight shadow) gives the portrait a bit more punch, and kills the shadows under eyes and chin.

Canon unveils PowerShot G11 : Digital Photography Review

Well this looks pretty cool.
Canon unveils PowerShot G11 : Digital Photography Review:

"The camera’s highest flash synchro speed has been increased to 1/2000th seconds, reducing the possibility of overexposed bright scenes. A real time histogram displays brightness levels on the PureColor II VA LCD screen, so photographers can easily view conditions and change settings when shooting.

The PowerShot G11 gives photographers the freedom to perfectly shoot fast-paced action. Quick Shot mode takes images almost instantly after pressing the shutter, so fast moving objects are always captured, whilst Servo AF/ AE continuously adjusts focus and exposure to optimise settings when photographing moving subjects.

The PowerShot G11 can be used with a wide range of Canon accessories, including the Speedlite 270EX, 430EX II and 580EX II; Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX and Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX flashes for enhanced shooting options; the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2, Speedlite Bracket BKT-DC1 and Remote Switch RS-60E3. Underwater photographers can even team the PowerShot G11 with the specially designed Waterproof Case WP-DC34 - an underwater housing allowing full control of the camera at depths down to 40m. The PowerShot G11 includes an HDMI port so users can review images on a full HD screen via an optional HDMI cable."

Announcing: Conscientious Portfolio Competition - Conscientious

Conscientious is having a portfolio competition. It looks great.
Announcing: Conscientious Portfolio Competition - Conscientious:

"I'm excited to announce the first Conscientious Portfolio Competition, which hopefully will turn into a regular feature (to be held at the end of each Summer). The winner of the competition will have her or his work featured here on this blog, in the form of an extended conversation/interview (which, of course, also showcases the photography). Details below. (slightly updated>

First of all, the Conscientious Portfolio Competition (CPC) is free. It's no pay-to-play scheme. There are no costs involved for you, other than whatever time it takes to send me your stuff.

Second, CPC is aimed at emerging photographers. Of course, the term 'emerging' is not extremely well defined; what it means that photographers not represented by a gallery will get preferential treatment over those that already are (but of course, the quality of the work also plays an important role)."

Shutterbug: Master Interview; Jerry Uelsmann

SB: It seems you were assembling your education like you assemble your images. You were synthesizing elements of understanding from the art world and the photographic world. And at that time many people still saw photography as a craft, not an experimental art form.

JU: Well, your comment is right on. That’s exactly it. There’s actually a quote in Weston’s Daybooks, where he goes to a museum and he sees something that he really likes and thinks, “God, that’s something I could use.” He thought that you use those things that are by rights of understanding yours. So as various concepts were introduced to me, I would think, “This is incredible.” Minor was the first role model I had who truly did no commercial photography. He did creative photography and taught and then he hung exhibits. I didn’t know people like that existed before. But I did, as you mentioned, bring together various aspects of my educational encounters to create whoever I am, my identity as an image-maker.

Untitled - 1997

Jerry Uelsmann was one of the photographers that made me want to make images. After I saw some of his images, I got really serious in the darkroom. I didn't try to do the collage thing, but the discipline that it took to make prints that had the kind of depth and light was truly a challenge.
