Unquiet Thoughts: Season Announcement : The New Yorker:
"On to the music! Our opening-night gala at ConAgra Jiffy Pop™ will proudly boast three of the most glittering superstars in the classical firmament: Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, and Lang Lang. Although none of them will actually perform in person, their charisma will envelop us nonetheless, thanks to miracles of modern technology. Yo-Yo is scheduled to play the Schumann Concerto via Skype while waiting for a connecting flight at the Frankfurt Airport; Renée has generously allowed us to play along to her greatest YouTube hits; and we will hear a voice-mail message from Lang Lang’s security personnel. After that, the Orchestra will embark upon its first international tour, under the magisterial direction of Daniel Barenboim. Avoiding the predictable European watering-holes, Maestro Barenboim and the Orchestra will spread the humanizing message of classical music to such places as Cuba, North Korea, Burma, Somalia, Afghanistan, and the tribal areas of Waziristan (State Department approval pending)."
