Waiting for the shuttle...

So we can get insurance that protects us when we profit from artistic theives and intellectual muggers? Who knew?
Copyright infringement, Litman noted, is the cost of doing business in this segment of the art world, and she recommended that galleries obtain liability insurance that would protect them against claims of copyright infringement.
I repeat.
Idiots.
Gallery and Transformative Artist Lose in Copyright Violation Case: Hmmm... 'transformative'; the new euphemism for 'ripoff' - cool.
No less startling was the finding that Prince's gallery was also subject to claims for copyright infringement, both directly and as a "vicarious and contributory" party. The gallery became directly liable through publishing a catalog of the offending images.
"A contributory infringer knows that copyright infringement is taking place and materially contributes to that process by promoting and advertising the exhibition of this work, while a vicarious infringer knows or should know that someone is infringing on a copyright. The Gagosian Gallery, according to Judge Batts's decision, "had the right and ability to supervise Prince's work, or at the very least the right and ability (and perhaps even responsibility) to ensure that Prince obtained licenses to use the Photos before they made Prince's Paintings available for sale."
Well, yeah. It's called aiding and abetting. Or being an 'accessory'...
Idiots.

Village unscathed by tsunami - thanks to mayor's 'crazy idea' - The power of conviction.
Mr Wamura left office three years after the floodgate was completed. He died in 1997 at age 88. Since the tsunami, residents have been visiting his grave to pay respects.
"At his retirement, Mr Wamura stood before village employees to bid farewell. He told them: "Even if you encounter opposition, have conviction and finish what you start. In the end, people will understand."
Yes. Conviction is a powerful trait.

My Prospective Road Trip for July. Phoenix to Portland. I love road trips.
Maybe it would be fun to have someone along.
Shooting medium and large format, so taking about 4 days up.
Back down along the California Coast. Hiway one better be open by then.
Cut across above San Francisco, through Yosemite and down 395 to Barstow, down to 10 and home.
Whew. I figure about 9 days.

B&H does a 'tongue in cheek' post on hipsters. Hipsters respond by showing that hipsterisim and stupid are linked genetically.
This fanatacism towards using only these cameras and film goes as far as also refusing to use apps on a smart device or digital camera that can mimic these looks.
You gotta get to the sanctimonious, self indulgent, wimp-ass, pussyboy comments - you really do.
"WaaWAa... you attacked me."
"I'm being judged... waawaa..."
"So much hate, so much hate..."
I love film, I laughed at the article.
Hell - it was funny and written totally in a humorous way.
They 'love' film, and were highly offended.
I hate highly offended people... they offend me.
Idiotards.
5 Reasons Why Free Is Hurting Us All : And will only get worse, not better. 2.0 Idiocy is criminal.
3. Lowered expectations
When there is no commitment, there is little to lose. I think this creates an atmosphere where content producers can simply slap something together with little value because, “What are they going to do, ask for a refund?”
Of course, the flip side is true as well–audiences have become pleasantly surprised when they actually get value from time spent reading or viewing.
There are more than these, but these will certainly do.
For now.

I believe that this method of dealing with the evil boss was counter-productive. I really do.
Another Gulf news outlet, 7DAYS, reports that the man jumped after an argument with his company over getting time off.

My friend Jan Klier sent this beautifully formatted email today. If I was an Art Director, I would call him up.
He specializes in food / fashion / life.
Talented.

Getting "Sign Off" on graphic design: Good information to consider for photographers as well.
In our enthusiasm to start a project we often don’t take the time to prepare the client. For many clients this will be their first web project.
Such a good point... maybe we should all remember that what we know all about is something our clients know nothing about.
That is presumably why they hired us.
Right?

Bad Clients. Good Clients. Great Clients.: lessons from the trenches of commercial photography...
I guess that's why the old photographer told me to "fire em quick." Let the bad ones go before they ruin your business. You know. While you still have a choice.
So very very true, Kirk. So true.
Direct Mail Promos are one way to get to art buyers. But beware of confusing them with incomplete information...
I know him as Dallas based but the postcard and the website say Los Angeles and Dallas. That always irks me. Who lives in more than one place?
I have been both guilty and perplexed by this same phenomena. I think it comes about by photographers thinking they MUST have a presence in a 'big' city for the 'big city' clients to have any interest.
Not so much in editorial, but definitely in advertising - especially if you want the big gigs.

201 Ways to Arouse Your Creativity (yeah, for writers... but photographers can find a lot of cool techniques here as well
Creativity is like sex. You fumble your way through, you get lost in it, you fall in love. Both are passionate, rhythmic, pleasurable, and flowing. Both can bear fruit. And both can rack your soul with vulnerability, bliss, fear and awkwardness.
Jobless claims hit 8-month high - "Surprisingly"... again. It must be cool to work in an industry that is so clueless.
A second report from the department showed nonfarm productivity increased at a 1.6 percent annual rate, braking from a 2.9 percent pace in the fourth quarter. The growth pace was above economists' expectations for 1 percent.
Truly, the thing that is surprising is that the MSM keeps going back to the same sources again and again. And so far this year - the numbers have been 'unexpected' and 'surprising' each and every month.
That much 'surprise' sounds more like gross incompetence to me.
Ya know.

Life is What You Make Of It! : My Current Self Isn’t Good Enough (my bud Oke's struggle with excellence.
The conclusion that I came up with and something that I didn’t know that I truly had to do was to push myself. Not in the sense of just doing more for my life and what I want to do, but more on the level of who I am now.

Steve Reich talks about his new piece WTC 9/11 and the term "minimalism" as a musical genre.
I think it’s a useful term for journalists. I think it’s a useful term for music historians. But for musicians, I think it’s terrible.
Yeah, Steve.
Photographers have their own 'new' terminology as well.
I have always been comfortable being a photographer.
Hoping this piece comes to recording soon.

"But the most important part of any strategy is to simply... SH
Show up.
Show up on time.
Show up with your book.
Show up with your business cards.
Show up with your ‘leave behind’.
Show up with enthusiasm.
Show up with grace.
Show up with questions about the job.
Show up with an understanding of what you can do.
Show up with a desire to win… for you and the agency. All of these things are so vitally important, but the most important one of all is to “Show Up.”
Web Design Tips for Small Business Web Sites
Blogs are not a necessity. If you don’t have enough content to fill one, then don’t have one.
Yes, so true.
I tell photographers that if you truly have nothing to share, then do something else. And that is really really important before you start out.
And Then I Fell. David DuChemin discusses life, mistakes and things that matter most.
The stakes are so high. We won’t get to the end and get a do-over. This is not a trial run. What we do here matters.
Wishing David a speedy recovery.
