I was talking with my littlest one last night when the unmistakeable sound of John coltrane filled the living room. I turned to see a startling site. Trane's "My Favorite Things" was being used as the music for a commercial. And Elvin, Jimmy and McCoy were there along with him while pictures of christmas ornaments and wrapping appeared with an excited VO.
I don't know what to make of it still. Coltrane is one of my few heros and I am not sure how I feel about his music as the background of a commercial. On the other hand, maybe this little fraction of exposure could spark some interest in those that hear it and they may discover the wonder of his music. I hope so.
And to hear a true improvisational master, listen to the "Live at the Village Vanguard Again", Implulse, recording of "My Favorite Things" - then go buy some Christmas ornaments or something.
