Thanks Greg. I am pretty bi-comp. I have 2 G4's and a G5 and started on Macs back in the day when I got my very first Mac - a Mac Plus... No HD, 1MB memory, 7" screen. Loved it. Still have it and a floppy with system on it as well as Freehand... hahahaha.
Lately with all the web work, I added the PC's. Design on the G5, work on the PC. I was thinking I needed another laptop, and was looking at a Dell.
But looks like its gonna be a Mac so I don't help contribute to whatever angst Bill is going through. I used to think he was kinda smart, but I guess he just had good people.
Ah, the Mac Plus. That would be cool to have around.
I'm a switcher, switching back in 2005 and don't regret it one bit. I got sick of the bloat with windows, the politics of MS and the blue screen of death. I used linux for a number of years dual booting with 2000 so I could use photoshop and softimage but ended up bailing and getting the first Macbook Pro 17". I have been very pleased do far. This girl is a workhorse!!
I'm also a switcher. I was PCs for many years, believing that Macs were overpriced for the performance they offered. However, in recent years, that gap has narrowed.
The turning point was when I was frustrated with Adobe Premiere on the PC, trying to edit a project - so I turned to Final Cut Pro on the Mac - whoa! What a difference. I no longer have to reboot multiple times through a project.
That was over 2 years ago. I just got a Macbook Pro a few months back, and I'm loving it. I put Lightroom on the Macbook pro - I can work on my photography on the road. In terms of videography, I can capture video on it, while continuing to work and edit on the G5.
My poor wife complains daily of her Windows machine. We're looking at getting a couple of Mac Minis for the kids.
The small difference in price is quickly paid off in productivity, especially if you're in the photography or videography fields.
Mac/Windows - whatever. I have never seen fanboys like the Macs have. More productivity, better for photography and video, bah, blah, blah.
There is no real difference aside from cosemtics these days. The mach hardware is overpriced for the same technology, however it is nicer looking than most PCs.
The whole security arguement is flawed as well. It is based on the wrong assumption. The mac falls under what we call "security by obscurity". Why aim your product (malware) for such a small base. As the mac share gets larger look for the amount of malware to increase.
As for reliability, the latest OS-X release broke a lot of things, so it is not just MS that has this problem. Some of the broken things are not fixed yet, look at the various Adobe forums to see what I mean.
The last releases of OSX have been point releases. With Vista, MS went from Windows 5.1 (XP) to Vista 6.0.
I won't disagree that Vista is off to a rocky start. I am on the inside beta group and the release of Vista SP1 that we got 2 days ago is what the original Vista should have been. It is fast, stable and a joy to use.
When Vista SP1 comes out things will be alot better. Heck even Apple had to patch Leopard within days of it's release.
MS, has the baggage of backwards compatibility that they have to deal with. For Apple it is not as big a deal. They have been able do things that MS can only dream of. If MS orphaned the old stuff, the corporate world would be up in arms.
Personally, I wish Apple would open up their system so that OSX could run on any PC or I could run Vista on the sexy mac hardware. There is no technical reason for this any more. In fact if apple wishes to grow, they may need to look at such options.
During the last quarter of '07 the MS Zune actually outsold the iPod. I just read this and find it interesting. Also look at Apple's stock in the last week or so despite stellar earnings. Look at the MS stock in the same period.
My major point is, I guess at this point in the evolution, most differences are cosmetic, not fucntional or technical.
I would like this whole Mac vs. OC thing just to go away.

Go mac and you'll never go back. :)
